ICE 52 NONNOVELOCE AND BELATRIX LAUNCHED TOGETHER IN VARAZZE

Nonnoveloce and Belatrix, the boats number 4 and number 5 of the Ice 52 Yachts series built by the Italian shipyard Ice Yachts since September 2015, arrived together at Marina di Varazze, Italy, yesterday.

The Ice 52 RS Belatrix, the fifth 52′ yacht built by Ice Yachts

Like a year and a half ago, visitors were attracted by the great details which distinguish the project from the other 50′ models available in the market: a slightly reverse bow and a “smiling” carving shape of the wide stern where the inflection change is evident but not enhanced by the now ever-present chine.

They’re two different twins. Outwardly, they differ in the hull colouring and the carbon rig provided by Southern Spars. The first features dark grey bulwarks, an opaque black mast and park avenue boom; the other, on the contrary, has a clear grey livrey, white mast and boom.

But these two boats essentially differ for some elements which are not visible from outside. Belatrix, in fact, is in RS version with full carbon hull instead of the glass-carbon epoxy resin one chosen for the standard version of Nonnoveloce.

The result was an over 10% decrease in displacement, which went from 12.9 to 11.3 tons (- 1,600 Kg).

Carbon has certainly played its part in the construction of the hull, together with other elements, such as the rudder axis and blade which, entirely made of black fibre, weigh just 49 kg and not 117 Kg like in the standard version. The keel, too, is lighter and doesn’t need the 300 kg terminal ballast. But the main contribution came from ancillary materials: on Belatrix, the deck is finished with Flexiteek synthetic teak which ensures an additional weight safeguard.

These first indications suggest that what really makes these two Ice 52 yachts different is their intended use as well as their character. Nonnovelice is a cruising yacht, suited to Cote d’Azur, for example, while Belatrix is well-suited to races and she will probably find her home port in Hong Kong.

Antal deck equipment and Raymarine electronic devices, too, reflect this difference. The Ice 52 number 4 has standard winches and tackles, two es97 multifunction displays, a hybrid touch multifunction display in the cockpit consoles and no multifunction displays in the chart station.

The RS model, on the contrary, is equipped with a G-series multifunction display, a I70s multifunction colour repeater in the master cabin. They are both equipped with four A75 displays, a Quantum 18” radar and a AIS system.

Excellent conditions characterized the first sea trials of the two new Ice 52 yachts.

Of course, both boats offer a complete range of comforts, such as a 46000 BTU air conditioning system in all cabins, memory-foam mattresses, wine cellar and icemaker and a 49” home tv.
