Rotating Saildrive: the electric propulsion of sailing yachts

The Rotating Saildrive is the revolution unveiled by Mitek at the last METS Amsterdam, which literally conquered all the boat owners who visited the company’s stand during the three-day exhibition.

MITEK was born in the heart of Emilia, where mechanical engineering is second nature. Just think of names such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ducati and many others that have taken Italian manufacturing excellence around the world.

MITEK designs and manufactures both inboard and outboard electric motors, and for over ten years has been working with both large and small companies, offering the most efficient solutions for switching to sustainable mobility, whether for new installations or refits.

The driving force behind the company is a passion for the sea, and it is precisely from this passion that the rotating saildrive comes from—an innovation that is truly revolutionary in the field of electric propulsion for boating.

The rotating saildrive offers an unmatched advantage in terms of control in tight spaces or in the presence of wind and currents that certainly do not make mooring or unmooring manoeuvres any easier. A crosswind pushing the bow off, or sudden gusts that limit our steering, make everything more complicated, and it is precisely in these situations that damage occurs. Arms trying to push the neighbouring boat away, or worse, legs wedged between one fender and another to correct the mooring.

All of this becomes a bad memory with the rotating saildrive. Thanks to its ability to rotate freely, it acts both as a propulsion system and as a stern thruster, allowing thrust to be directed exactly where it is needed. This makes harbour manoeuvres much easier and more precise, as the boat can be moved or turned on the spot regardless of weather conditions, avoiding ending up in tight spots or colliding with other boats.

Main advantages of the Mitek rotating saildrive

  • The leg can rotate completely, effectively providing 360-degree manoeuvrability with no dead spots.
  • Electrical efficiency is ensured by the use of permanent magnet motors, delivering power from 15 hp up to 40 hp.
  • Easy installation on board.
  • Full control via the Mitek app (battery status, range, motor rpm).

In conclusion, the Mitek rotating saildrive allows all owners to eliminate the inboard engine in favour of a greener solution and, above all, one that offers great peace of mind, even when sailing solo.
