Volvo Ocean Race: riding the storm in the ocean

A special race for extremely trained crews, able to react any sea conditions. The Volvo Ocean Race is a unique competition which requires unparalleled effort from both skippers and crews. This is why any sailor taking part in the competition should be long-experienced and able to handle the most challenging situations.

The video below shows some among the most striking moments of the round the world race. Crews are caught on camera during ocean storms, while sailing in extreme conditions.

Aerial footage does justice to the troubles crews have to deal with; in the last editions, the race covered over 39,000 nautical miles.

Very high waves, harsh weather conditions and breath-taking manoeuvres are shown in the following selection, which refers to the best moments of the previous editions until the 2014-15 one.

The Volvo Ocean Race is indeed a sailing competition held every three years. This year, seven teams left from Alicante: now, only three of them are running, confirming the rigors of the event.

For the first time, the race includes 11 legs. According to the Volvo Ocean Race management team, the competition has attracted almost 2 billion TV spectators all around the world thanks to its international character, which enables every corner of the planet to explore any other corner of the planet.

The record participation was registered during the 1981-82 edition, with 29 crews on the start line. A record year also because the race was won by the Dutch skipper Conny van Rietschoten, the only one skipper who got the back-to-back.

Waiting to find out the winner of the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race, let’s enjoy the video showing the best manoeuvres performed in extreme conditions. Of course, we wish never to handle such harsh conditions, if not with a highly experienced professional crew.
