The complete Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro foul weather gear review: let the test begin.
The ocean is beautiful, but as anyone who sails knows well, it can quickly turn into a hostile environment. When you find yourself facing challenging passages—perhaps with 25 or 30 knots of wind, rough seas, and buckets of water slamming you from every direction—the technical gear you wear becomes matter of life and death. In those grueling moments, the fine line between the best sailing day of your life and hypothermia comes down to just one factor: the quality of your foul weather gear.
And that is exactly why we wanted to analyze the performance of the new Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro foul weather gear in detail, through an initial, rigorous test conducted by the professionals at The International Yachting Media at the Marina Porto Antico Testing Center.
The primary goal of this review is to thoroughly analyze and test a piece of sailing gear that is arguably the best product available on the market today. Designed and manufactured by the world-renowned marine brand, this product line is called Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro, and it aims to radically revolutionize comfort and safety for sailors, with absolutely no compromises.

An absolute must-read review for every offshore sailing enthusiast!
The Ultimate Trial: The High-Pressure Water Test
The practical evaluation of the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro foul weather gear began in a direct, empirical way. Before diving into the technical specifications, The International Yachting Media team decided to test the jacket’s real-world water resistance. Using a high-pressure water hose, the garment was subjected to a direct spray, which was frequently aimed straight at the wrists and collar—critical vulnerabilities for any foul weather gear.
Despite high-pressure water being notorious for finding its way inside even the most specialized marine shells, the results achieved with the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro were remarkably reassuring. Unzipping the jacket at the end of the test, which lasted for over an hour, the tester confirmed they were completely dry: not a single drop of water had penetrated either the jacket or the bibs.
This clear, definitive outcome scores a massive first point in favor of the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro, proving its waterproofing capabilities right out of the gate.
Aboard the Daydreamer: An Analysis of the 4L Hybrid Stretch Dry Pro Fabric
Following that clear demonstration of waterproofing, the analysis moved inside the Daydreamer, which serves as the official lab boat for The International Yachting Media. This warm and welcoming environment is undoubtedly the ideal setting to dive into and break down a topic as technical as next-generation marine materials.
When evaluating technical gear designed for extreme conditions, the first thing to examine is unquestionably the fabric. It is in this crucial department that, in our opinion, the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro leaves the competition behind by introducing a fabric that to call “innovative” would be an understatement: we are talking about 4L Hybrid Stretch Dry Pro.
This is a cutting-edge material consisting of four distinct, specially engineered layers that work in synergy. They not only completely block the dreaded entry of water but also allow for highly efficient, constant breathability.
Furthermore, as the fabric’s name suggests, for the first time on the market, we are looking at a product that is also “stretch”—meaning it features built-in elasticity. This technical feature is a game-changer, as it allows us to move with total freedom during all maneuvers.
To put the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro into proper perspective, the level of waterproofing offered by this apparel line is officially rated as “Survival Grade.” The data speaks for itself: this innovative textile shell withstands an impressive 35,000 mm water column, setting a true benchmark. Equally impressive is the breathability rating, which ensures a 14,000 mm transfer of moisture from the inside out, keeping your body constantly dry and thermo-regulated.
Design and Innovative Features of the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro Dry Top
Diving deeper into the details of the upper section of this ocean foul weather gear, it is immediately clear that we are looking at a true technical “dry top.” As you would naturally expect from gear of this caliber, it goes without saying but bears repeating: every single seam is meticulously heat-sealed, ensuring the highest possible level of structural waterproofing.
Looking inside the jacket, we can immediately spot numerous pockets—essential features for keeping your hands warm and safely stowing personal items that absolutely must stay dry.
The jacket’s collar represents another major innovation for this model. The protective outer collar is designed to be completely removable via a heavy-duty zipper. This setup reveals an internal neoprene-lined collar that, once zipped up and securely tightened with its practical straps, creates a completely watertight seal. By removing the bulkier outer collar, you get a dual-purpose garment that functions both as a full protective ocean jacket and as a technical dry top—perfect for dinghy sailing or any situation where you need maximum freedom of movement and agility. Unlike traditional dry tops, which are fully closed smocks that you pull over your head, the “Full Zip Smock” (the official name of this jacket) features a full-length zipper that allows you to open it completely to put it on.
The integrated hood is also strictly ocean-grade and comes equipped with several essential adjustments. A perfect hood must shelter you from torrential rain without ever blocking the peripheral vision required to steer the boat. To achieve this, there are dedicated adjustments to ensure a perfect fit across the user’s forehead. However, the real stroke of design genius is the addition of transparent side panels: this way, when the sailor turns their head to look around during maneuvers, visibility remains completely unobstructed.
When it comes to passive safety at sea, the jacket features various safety reflectors on the back, behind the neck, on the sleeves, and strategically placed throughout the garment. These inserts are critical because, when hit by a light source, they illuminate brightly, making the wearer visible from a great distance even in low-light conditions.
On the front, this dry top seals completely tight using heavy-duty watertight zippers. Moving to the exterior, we find two more practical side pockets and a convenient utility pocket on the left sleeve. Last but certainly not least, the bottom hem of the jacket is also made of neoprene.
This waistband serves a dual purpose: first, it provides the necessary watertight seal from below (tightening securely with its adjustment straps), and second, being made of high-grip neoprene, it stays firmly in place against the bibs. This technical feature ensures you can move easily around the boat without the jacket riding up or sliding down.
The Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro Bibs: Comfort and Ergonomics
The bibs that complete the luxurious Ocean Pro line must also be considered a true masterpiece of “marine engineering.” The focus on ergonomics is clear in the multiple adjustment options, designed specifically to guarantee an impeccable fit for every body type. Specifically, the user has the ability to adjust not only the height of the suspenders but can also easily adjust the waistband of the pants to ensure they fit the body perfectly.
One of the features most requested by professionals, and brilliantly implemented in this garment, is the double front zipper. This zipper obviously performs the classic function of closing from one side, but it also allows us to open it from the other end to tend to our business without having to take off the entire bibs. And we all know perfectly well how vital and important this small detail can be when sailing in rough seas.
The design of the bibs is highly protective, coming up very high to fully cover the chest. This feature provides superior thermal insulation when worn with the jacket, but also allows them to be used on their own without the jacket. Finally, we find two comfortable upper front pockets and two additional pockets located on the thighs, which allow us to warm our hands and conveniently and safely store everything we need.
An Investment in Safety: Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro Pricing
Equipping yourself with the right gear to face the harshest conditions at sea requires a conscious investment. As noted in the YouTube video description and official catalogs, the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro line is, unsurprisingly, positioned at the highest end of the market, fully aligning with its “Survival Grade” performance.
Breaking down the individual garments that make up the system:
- Dry Top / Smock Jacket (Ocean Pro Full Zip Smock): The jacket from our test is offered at a retail price of around €700.
- Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro Jacket (Men’s Ocean Pro Jacket): For those who prefer a traditional jacket cut, the cost is approximately €820.
- Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro Bibs (Men’s Ocean Pro Hi-Fit): The protective pants, essential for ensuring complete and ergonomic waterproof insulation, retail for around €740.
While this represents a significant financial commitment, the cost of this marine gear translates directly into a guarantee of reliability, safety, and comfort for offshore sailors who need equipment they can depend on in any weather condition.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro Foul Weather Gear
How waterproof is the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro foul weather gear?
The foul weather gear boasts an extraordinary level of waterproofing officially rated as "Survival Grade." In fact, the garment is engineered to withstand an incredible 35,000 mm water column, which currently represents an absolute record. During a rigorous test where high-pressure water was sprayed using a hose (a level of pressure that would typically penetrate most marine shells), not a single drop of water made its way inside the gear.
How much does the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro cost?
The pricing for the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro gear reflects the use of its revolutionary technical fabric and the complex engineering of the garment. Specifically, the dry top (Full Zip Smock) retails for €700, the protective jacket (Ocean Pro Jacket) is priced at €820, while the bibs (Ocean Pro Hi-Fit) are offered at €740.
Will my movements on board be restricted while wearing this offshore foul weather gear?
Absolutely not—in fact, the gear actually enhances agility. The major innovation introduced by Henri Lloyd is the use of 4L Hybrid Stretch Dry Pro fabric, a four-layer material that is fully stretchable. This technological feature allows the sailor to always move with complete and total freedom. Contributing to this mobility is the neoprene waistband at the bottom of the jacket, which prevents the fabric from annoyingly riding up or sliding against the bibs underneath.
Are the bibs comfortable?
The bibs were designed with extreme attention to onboard livability. They offer multiple adjustment options for both the suspenders and the waistband, allowing the pants to fit the body perfectly. Furthermore, they feature an incredibly useful detail: a double front zipper that allows you to quickly tend to personal business without having to take off the bibs. This design choice proves to be vital and important when sailing in rough seas, where shedding layers is simply out of the question.
How does the Henri Lloyd Ocean Pro ocean hood protect against rain without blocking your view?
The included hood is a dedicated ocean-grade model featuring numerous precise adjustments designed to keep it perfectly fitted to the forehead, providing optimal facial protection. To prevent this from blocking the user's peripheral vision, the designers integrated an innovative transparent side border. Thanks to this ingenious detail, sailors never experience a loss of visibility when turning their heads while underway.
Can I use the dry top in different conditions or seasons?
Absolutely. The jacket quickly adapts to different conditions thanks to its intelligent design. The collar, for instance, is removable via a zipper. When the outer protective collar is removed, a practical neoprene-lined collar remains, which becomes watertight when tightened with its straps. This ingenious modular concept ensures the jacket pulls double duty: it works both as a heavy-duty storm jacket and as a technical, lightweight dry top for those sailing dinghies or looking for a garment that allows for even greater freedom of movement.
