Ambrogio Beccaria makes history: the Italian conquers the Vendée Arctique and launches his challenge for the Vendée Globe

Ambrogio Beccaria Writes a New Chapter in Italian Sailing History. The 34-year-old Milanese skipper has conquered the Vendée Arctique 2026, becoming the first Italian to win the prestigious solo, non-stop ocean race—the first event in the qualification process for the Vendée Globe 2028. This marks the first Italian victory in the solo Arctic race, coming after an extraordinary comeback in the waters of the North Atlantic. Aboard the IMOCA Allagrande Mapei, Beccaria completed the 3,190-nautical-mile course in 8 days, 14 hours, 5 minutes, and 50 seconds, crossing the finish line in Les Sables-d’Olonne on the night of June 16 after one of the most astonishing comebacks in recent offshore sailing history.

A Race Born Amid Technical Troubles and Unforeseen Setbacks

The victory holds even greater value considering the hardships faced during the opening stages of the competition. Having set sail on June 7 alongside eight other skippers, Beccaria had to deal with a series of technical issues, including equipment failures and getting tangled in a fishing net that threatened to jeopardize his entire campaign. For several hours, the Italian navigator even considered abandoning the race altogether.

“I never told myself I could win. After 24 hours, I was almost at the point of thinking about stopping. I didn’t feel like heading north without an autopilot; I lacked confidence,” Ambrogio Beccaria recounted. “Then, little by little, I managed to overcome every single problem I had. I gained confidence in the boat and in myself. History was written one step at a time.“

Ambrogio Beccaria’s Decisive Comeback Against Sam Goodchild

For most of the race, the leader was British skipper Sam Goodchild aboard Macif, the IMOCA that had won the previous Vendée Globe with Charlie Dalin at the helm. With only a few hundred miles left to the finish, Goodchild seemed to be firmly in control, holding a lead of over 200 miles. However, weather conditions and strategic tactical choices gradually reopened the race. Beccaria knew how to capitalize on this, gaining mile after mile until he completed the overtake in the final hours of sailing.

“Honestly, the result goes way beyond anything I had imagined during these eight days of racing. When I look back at everything that happened, I’m still very surprised to be here. There was definitely a good dose of luck involved, but you also have to know how to seize opportunities when they present themselves. Sam Goodchild on Macif dominated the entire race. I never thought I could catch him. He left a window open, and I simply tried to see if there was a move to make. In the end, things really went our way.”

Sailing Toward the Arctic Circle

The Vendée Arctique is widely considered one of the most grueling tests on the IMOCA circuit. The route takes skippers into the northern latitudes of the Atlantic, facing often extreme weather conditions and freezing temperatures. For Beccaria, the experience in Arctic waters felt almost surreal:

“We went very far north, and at one point, it felt like we had approached the edge of the world. There was a strange kind of atmosphere; you could barely see anything, and we didn’t really know where we were. The cold was also incredibly intense. It was like a never-ending dream that lasted for over two days.“

During the crossing, the skippers battled waves exceeding 3.5 meters and particularly challenging sailing conditions.

Another Historic Milestone for Italian Sailing

The victory in the Vendée Arctique adds to an already rich resume of prestigious achievements. Beccaria had already made history in Italian offshore sailing by becoming the first Italian to win the Mini Transat, one of the toughest and most formative ocean races in the world. However, this success represents a major step up, achieved during his solo debut on a latest-generation IMOCA and in a competition featuring some of the finest ocean racers on the planet. The feat confirms the strength of the Allagrande Mapei project and establishes Beccaria as one of the most highly anticipated contenders on the road to the next Vendée Globe.

The Vendée Globe 2028 in Ambrogio Beccaria’s Sights

The Vendée Arctique served as the first major testing ground of the four-year cycle leading up to the solo, non-stop round-the-world race. His ability to fight back against technical difficulties, his resilience in the most extreme conditions, and the tactical maturity shown in the final stretch of the race are highly encouraging signs for the future. In a circuit traditionally dominated by French and Anglo-Saxon skippers, Beccaria’s success also highlights the growth of Italian offshore sailing at the highest international levels.

Conclusion

Ambrogio Beccaria’s victory in the Vendée Arctique 2026 goes far beyond a simple sporting result. It is the triumph of a sailor capable of turning a race that began with technical problems and uncertainty into one of the most extraordinary comebacks in recent ocean racing history. As the first Italian to win the competition, Beccaria cements his talent among the absolute elites of international offshore sailing and sends a powerful message ahead of the Vendée Globe 2028. It is an achievement that strengthens Italy’s role on one of the most prestigious and competitive stages of ocean navigation.
