During the test, we put the Selva Aurion 40 through its paces in particularly significant conditions: a navigation of nearly 100 nautical miles from Cannes to Genoa, arriving at Marina Porto Antico, home of The International Yachting Media Test Center. The boat was powered by a pair of Selva XSR 300: two 4.2-liter V6 outboards characterized by specific XSR mapping, capable of delivering particularly vigorous torque at low and mid RPMs. The result is almost instantaneous planing and a recorded top speed of 44.5 knots.
But the Aurion 40 is not just a matter of numbers. The large cockpit, the expansive sunbathing areas, the cabin with a queen-size bed, and the head with a separate shower stall reflect a maxi-RIB designed also for spending multiple days at sea. As is well known, Selva Marine’s philosophy is to design practical, robust, and reliable boats and engines, without necessarily chasing the superfluous. However, with the Aurion 40, the shipyard has taken a decisive step forward, bringing this approach to a major scale.

Our test begins in Cannes. Nearly 100 nautical miles separate the starting point from Genoa’s Marina Porto Antico, serving as a particularly interesting proving ground not only to check absolute performance, but above all to evaluate comfort, hull behavior, and fuel consumption during extended navigation. Indeed, a long passage represents the most meaningful test for a boat, as it allows for an assessment not merely in a short sprint to maximum speed, but in real-world conditions.
As mentioned, propelling the maxi-RIB are two 4.2-liter Selva XSR 300 V6s. The XSR acronym identifies a specific electronic management configuration and engine tuning, designed to prioritize torque delivery. Throttle response is immediate: the Selva Aurion 40 gets up on plane almost instantly, conveying from the very first meters the feeling of having a substantial reserve of power at your disposal.
Selva XSR 300: massive torque and a top speed of 44.5 knots
At 25 knots, the two engines run at approximately 3,500 RPM, with a total recorded fuel consumption of about 62 liters/hour. A figure that must naturally be read alongside the specific consumption per nautical mile—a metric particularly significant when evaluating a vessel intended for covering long distances. Increasing the pace to 30 knots and 3,840 RPM, fuel consumption rises to around 82 liters/hour. Yet, the Selva Aurion 40 continues to hold a considerable power reserve in store.
Cruising speed is pushed to 35 knots, reached at around 4,330 RPM, with an overall fuel consumption of roughly 120 liters/hour. Then comes the time for the full-throttle test. We drop the throttles and the Aurion 40 quickly surpasses 40 knots, reaching a recorded top speed of 44.5 knots. This is a significant figure for a boat that, alongside its sporty nature, brings to the table layout space and onboard livability that place it squarely among cruising maxi-RIBs as well.
A precise and surprisingly stable hull
However, top speed tells only part of the story. Indeed, one of the most interesting aspects of the trial concerns the Aurion 40’s handling in turns. At around 30 knots, we initiate a particularly tight right-hand turn, yet the hull remains composed and tracks its line with precision, even as we increase speed further. We experience the same feeling during the counter-turn to port: the vessel responds promptly to helm inputs without showing any obvious tendency to push wide.
Another particularly meaningful test occurs when the Selva Aurion 40 crosses back over its own wake. Here too, the hull absorbs the passage with great composure, transmitting no shocks onboard. This is an important trait in a maxi-RIB of this size, especially considering the potential to use it not only for short day trips, but also for more demanding passages.
The acceleration test confirms our initial impressions. From a standing start, the Aurion 40 moves rapidly through the various speed thresholds: 10, 20, 30, 35, and finally 40 knots are reached in just 19 seconds. The torque availability of the two Selva XSR 300 V6s is thus clearly felt. Credit goes not only to the total output, but also to the engines’ responsiveness, allowing the boat to pop out of the water very quickly. Yet, as the speedometer climbs, a high level of comfort remains onboard. It is precisely this balance between performance and livability that best characterizes the Aurion 40.
How the Selva Aurion 40 is built
Upon arriving in Genoa, the test shifts from navigation to exploring the spaces of the Selva Aurion 40. Starting at the stern, the first striking element is the large swallowtail swim platform, which greatly facilitates water access and re-boarding operations. Right in front of it lies a large central sunpad, bisected by a walkway that allows for easy movement along the deck. The dimensions are sufficient to comfortably accommodate two lying down, but the space can host up to four people. The overall impression is that of a deck engineered to be lived in without sacrificing passageways.
Moving toward the middle of the boat, you encounter a particularly generous dinette. Its layout is by no means rigid, however: the area can be transformed and conceals a small onboard galley. The wetbar integrates burners and a sink, while underneath there is a table that can be raised as needed. This configuration allows for quick conversion into a true social dining area for lunch or dinner. Furthermore, the presence of the arch designed for canvas/bimini installation makes it possible to shield the area from the elements, significantly expanding the usability of the dinette even during peak sun hours or less favorable conditions.
The helm station: ergonomics and visibility
The helm position is elevated relative to the deck sole, offering a particularly wide field of view. Even after the 100-mile passage, the driving position remained comfortable and suited for prolonged helm duties. Forward visibility is excellent, and lateral line-of-sight allows full control over the entire boat.
Control ergonomics have also been carefully designed. Throttles, bow thrusters, navigation instruments, and push-button panels for managing main vessel functions and home automation are grouped within easy reach. The result is a dashboard that prioritizes functionality without needlessly complicating vessel operation.
Moving forward: side decks and large sunpads
The side walkways are sufficiently wide and accompanied by sturdy handrails, allowing access to the bow area easily and, above all, safely. Arriving at the bow, the Selva Aurion 40 offers a second large sunpad. The bow area configuration takes advantage of the beam to create a relaxation surface intended for two or three people, but the setup can also be adjusted to form two comfortable chaise lounges. This solution further enhances the boat’s versatility: the bow can turn into a genuine lounge area while underway or at anchor.
The interior: a true cabin onboard
The biggest surprise of the Aurion 40 comes upon entering the cabin. For a maxi-RIB in this category, the interior volume is particularly generous. The bow area houses a large queen-size bed, arranged longitudinally and capable of comfortably sleeping two people. To the sides of the bed, several storage compartments are available, essential for cruising usage.
Toward the stern, a second social area is located. The indoor dinette can be converted, via dedicated cushions, into additional berths. This means the Aurion 40 does not limit itself to providing a cabin for occasional daytime breaks, but offers a true environment dedicated to overnight stays on board.
Completing the interior is a particularly generous head equipped with a separate shower stall, confirming its cruising vocation. On a maxi-RIB, successfully integrating a cabin with a double bed, a convertible dinette, and a full head without excessively compromising outdoor spaces represents one of the most compelling highlights of the project.

While boasting impressive performance, the boat does not sacrifice livability on the altar of sportiness. The result is a maxi-RIB that can be interpreted equally well as a large day boat or as a platform for longer cruises, offering a degree of space and comfort that is surprising for its class.
