EXHIBITION OF DÜSSELDORF – DEHLER 42, WHERE THE OPTIONALS ARE NOT AN EXTRA

Among the boats which have caught our attention at this Exhibition of Düsseldorf there it the new Dehler 42, a project by Judel/Vrolijk Studio, which replaces the previous 41-feet model.

It is a cruiser/racer boat which finds in balance its reason for being. All in all, seeing it at the Exhibition of Düsseldorf confirms the opinion we reached during our fast visit to the Exhibition of Paris last December, when the border between a traditional use as fast amusement boat and a racing model appeared clear to us but easy to cross at the same time, thanks to a common base where many variables meet for the benefit of the sporting character.

The shipyard, which belongs to the group including Hanse, Moody, Varianta, Fjiord and Sealine brands (with some positive effects on scale economies and final product prices) has created a standard version where the “all included” means a lot: sails, electronic, composite wheels, electric pulleys, while optionals concern the regatta world with the possibility of a total customization.

The features which define the versatility of this boat are always the same. Waterlines, for example, are the same in both the standard version and the regatta one, with subtle astern sections and a fore flare which increases the legth waterline and speed when the boat is swerved.

Moreover, the mast fits through the deck and it is placed against the keel, while a carbon support at the bottom of the hull gives more rigidity in both the two versions.

Let’s start to verify differences as regards the regatta version, starting from the keel which passes from 2,15 metres in the standard version up to 2,40 metres for more aggressive performances. There is also a low draught version (1,98 metres).

The cockpit, too, offers many possibility of customization. It can be closed, like in the model we have seen at the Exhibition of Düsseldorf, with a platform for sea baths which disappears in the ragatta version. In both the two versions, manoeuvres are simple and you can drive the boat with only two people on board. An astern bowsprit allows to fit a powerful gennaker out.

Of course, displacement is almost a ton lighter in the sport version. This is possible thanks to the composite materials used for equipments.

Interiors catch our attention for two reasons: the shapes, smooth and with no corners, and the generous use of solid wood for finishes. Standard essences are mahogany and Australian acacia but you can choose among American cherry wood, dark walnut and many colours.

You can have two or three cabins. The innovative Dehler UNI Door is an interesting solution which divides the bathroom from the hall, or the shower from the toilet.

Space arrangement is very traditional, with a L-shaped kitchen and two facing sofas divided by a central table.
