Volvo Penta D13 1000 and D13 IPS1350 engines: Volvo enters superyachts market.

With the new D13-1000 engine, Volvo Penta not only launches the most powerful engine never built but actually enters the market of recreational superyachts. A very important step forward for the company that definitively imposes its own standards while experiencing the simultaneous launch of the new D13-IPS1350 version.  The entrenched Volvo Inboard Performance System (IPS) delivers the equivalent power of 1,350 hp that, available in twin, triple and quadruple installation, can power yachts up to 35-40 metres in length.

“It was hugely exciting for us to create our most powerful engine” says Johan Wästeräng, vice president for product management in the marine leisure segment at Volvo Penta.

“It’s truly a landmark product for our marine range and really gives us a bigger step into the large yacht market. We’ve spent a long time talking to customers about what they want and refining our engine and IPS designs so that we can offer unique experiences with exceptional products that are ideal for world-class vessels”.

Volvo Penta has carried out a major redesign of the 13-liter engine model and drivetrain. Features include new pistons, efficient injectors and improved cooling systems, which the company says combine to produce 11 percent more power than on previous engines.

” The engineering excellence and attention to detail of our design teams mean that we’ve created an engine with superior performance, comfort and reliability – taking it to the next level,” says Wästeräng.

“Our aim is to help yacht owners realize their dreams and enjoy great adventures, whether that means having fun at high speeds or simply relaxing on board for longer before refueling. It’s all part of our easy boating philosophy.”

The IPS30 Pod Drive, too, has been totally redesigned for the new D13-1000. Together, they form the integrated package named D13-IPS1350, as the 1000 hp engine provides the equivalent power of a 1350 hp engine when matched to the IPS drive.

In addition to great performance, the main features of modern IPS systems are low fuel consumption, greater range, top speed, low vibration and noise levels as well as compact layout.

” The IPS drive has been upgraded so that it can handle the extra performance from the new D13 engine,” said Björn Rönnvall, product manager for the marine leisure segment at Volvo Penta. “We have found that there is a demand for greater durability with bigger yachts as the captain has to cruise to wherever the owner wants it to be, so the usage is higher. Increased low-end torque gives the vessel greater maneuverability at low speeds, and with the compact configuration this means there is more room on board for the luxuries that high-end yacht owners want. IPS gives versatility and more freedom of design and performance – it really is the ultimate choice for large yachts.”

New D13-IPS1350 engines have been tested on a 21-metre yacht and its data compared to a traditional 1,360 hp engine from a Volvo Penta’s competitor. The IPS-equipped yacht was lighter with better displacement, it used 36% less fuel, sailed faster with lower noise and vibration.

Prestigious brands like Grand Banks, Riviera and Absolute Yachts have announced that they’ve already installed new D13-IPS1350 engines on their boats.

We only have to wait for the next Cannes Yachting Festival where we’ll test these engines on board the new Absolute Yachts Navetta 73.
