Ferrari unveils Hypersail, the flying monohull: Design and technology redefine ocean navigation

On the occasion of Milan Design Week, Ferrari unveiled the official livery of Hypersail, the innovative 100-foot flying ocean monohull that represents a new frontier in yachting. The project blends advanced engineering, aerodynamic research, and a distinct stylistic language, transferring the Prancing Horse’s design identity to the world of sailing.

Hypersail was created as an open innovation platform, a technological laboratory where multidisciplinary expertise converges to redefine the limits of high-performance sailing. At the core of Hypersail’s development is a structured collaboration between the Ferrari Tech Team, the Ferrari Design Studio, and renowned naval architect Guillaume Verdier, a leading figure in the design of next-generation racing yachts. Technical coordination was overseen by Matteo Lanzavecchia and Marco Guglielmo Ribigini, while the stylistic direction was led by Flavio Manzoni, the driving force behind the brand’s aesthetic evolution in recent years. The project’s stated goal is to bring the same design philosophy that defines Ferrari automobiles to the nautical world: continuous innovation, technological research, and a powerful formal identity.

The Ferrari Design Studio worked in close synergy with Verdier and the engineering team to translate complex technical parameters into a cohesive visual language. The streamlined silhouette echoes the pure proportions of the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2, while the coachroof architecture draws inspiration from the Ferrari 499P hypercar, the symbol of the brand’s most recent endurance racing victories. The deck surfaces were engineered to maximize technical efficiency, following the same rigorous engineering process applied to the development of the brand’s sports cars.

In the past, the experience gained from racing car projects—to cite a sector with incredibly high technological content—has already encouraged us to explore more complex fields, where we can test ourselves and expand our expertise”.

One of Hypersail’s most innovative features is the integration of sustainable energy systems. The solar panels, seamlessly embedded into the deck and the topsides, were designed through advanced solar exposure studies conducted specifically for ocean racing. These elements are more than just a power solution; they are a functional safety component. They are fully walkable, equipped with non-slip surfaces, and integrated with technical fastening systems that ensure the crew can move freely and safely across the boat.

Hypersail’s Livery: Fly Yellow as a Historical Identity

The Hypersail livery serves as a central narrative element of the project. The Ferrari Design Studio chose to bridge the gap between the future and tradition by using Fly Yellow, an iconic shade in the brand’s history. This color—born from an intuition by Fiamma Breschi and tied to the memory of driver Luigi Musso—was first adopted for the legendary Ferrari 275 GTB, marking the start of a color tradition destined to become symbolic.

On the Hypersail, Fly Yellow interacts with Hypersail Grey, a shade that visually expresses the properties of carbon fiber, the vessel’s primary material. The contrast between these two colors creates a functional and recognizable aesthetic, evoking historic models like the Ferrari 512 BB, the first example of an integrated livery in the brand’s history.

An iconic installation in the heart of Milan

During Design Week, from April 22 to 26, the Hypersail project was showcased through an exhibition at the Ferrari Flagship Store Milan and through the Hypersail flagship installation—a technological sculpture positioned on the main terrace of HIGHLINE Milan, overlooking Piazza del Duomo. The installation was conceived as both a visual and conceptual symbol of the project: a landmark representing the convergence of design, technology, and a futuristic vision for ocean navigation.
