The Sea Trial of the Scanner Envy 1100 Sterndrive Version
The day following the boat show, we arrived at the dock full of expectations for the sea trial of the Scanner Envy 1100. The weather conditions, however, were anything but forgiving. It had rained heavily overnight, with violent thunderstorms and winds blowing relentlessly between 25 and 30 knots. The result was a sea characterized by a long, high swell, well exceeding one meter in height.
These were challenging conditions that would put many vessels in this category in difficulty, discouraging anyone from seeking maximum performance. Even we initially doubted whether we could push this beautiful Scanner Envy 1100 to its limits. However, our work requires us to evaluate hull behavior in every situation, and these conditions proved to be the perfect proving ground to test the true reliability of this Maxi-RIB.
Powering us today is a pair of twin 6.2-liter V8 MerCruiser petrol engines. These powertrains, perfect for the sterndrive version of the Scanner Envy 1100, unleash a total output of an impressive 700 horsepower (very close to the maximum certified rating of 750 HP). As soon as we exit the protected waters of the harbor and face the open sea, we decide not to hesitate and push the throttles down.
Performance and Comfort: Flying Over the Waves
The sound produced by the two American V8s aboard the Scanner Envy 1100 is simply fantastic, gritty, and immersive. Getting onto the plane is lightning-fast, occurring literally in the blink of an eye; the RIB lifts out of the water at around 9-10 knots, and from the very first moments, we realize the quality of the hydrodynamic design of the Scanner Envy 1100.
From the images of our bow camera, it is entirely clear how rough the sea is today, with this long and treacherous swell. Yet, the hull of the Scanner Envy 1100, equipped with a very pronounced bow “V”, cuts through the water masses and glides through them without any problem and, above all, without slamming impacts.
We quickly reach a speed of 28 knots and, incredibly, comfort on board remains superlative. To test the hull’s beam stability and achieve maximum performance, we turn to set a trajectory parallel to the wave motion, placing the large waves beam-on—a point of sail notoriously critical for the stability of inflatable craft. At a speed of 35 knots, with the sea on the beam, the Scanner Envy 1100 navigates incredibly well; the hull absorbs the lateral wave motion and gives us a great sense of safety.
At this sustained speed, our engines are turning completely effortlessly at just over 4,000 RPM. This is a strategic cruising pace: it allows us to undertake long transfers while maintaining an extremely high level of comfort on one hand, and ensuring genuinely low fuel consumption on the other.
Maneuverability and Top Speed of the Scanner Envy 1100
Despite the sea conditions, we decided to put the agility of the Scanner Envy 1100 to the test. We slow down to about 30 knots and, without easing off the throttle, initiate a very tight turn, locking the helm hard to port. The response of the Scanner Envy 1100 is instantaneous and thrilling: the Maxi-RIB carves a precise, tight arc without displaying the slightest skid or loss of lateral grip.
We counter-turn to starboard, and the scenario repeats itself identically: we manage to turn in an even tighter radius, and the hull of this maxi-rib remains completely unfazed. Accelerating into the turn, the only sensation felt on board is the rapid buildup of centrifugal force holding us firmly in our seats.
I would say that this hull fully honors the premise that Scanner boats feature truly “legendary” hulls.
We bring the Scanner Envy 1100 back broadside to the waves and, without hesitation, slam the throttles down to demand 100% from our MerCruiser V8 engines.
The GPS display rapidly climbs to 40 knots, then continues up to 44 knots. At this insane speed, we are literally flying over the large waves. The dynamic behavior of this Maxi-RIB’s hull is extraordinary: even at top speed, the impact with the choppy surface remains controlled. Our instrument settles on a figure of 44.9 knots, which is effectively the top speed achieved today by the Scanner Envy 1100 in this sterndrive version.
Before heading the bow back toward the harbor, we indulge in one final stability test. We slow down, settling around 40 knots, and keeping the throttle open, we enter a wide, fast turn. This type of high-speed maneuver in heavy seas is often a weak point for many vessels. But not for the Scanner Envy 1100, which, even in today’s conditions, does not flinch a millimeter.

Onboard Tour of the Scanner Envy 1100: The Bow and Cockpit
Stepping aboard the Scanner Envy 1100, the first impression is one of masterful space optimization. Starting at the far bow, the Scanner Envy 1100 welcomes guests with a massive, comfortable sunbed. This area is designed not only for lounging in the sun but also boasts extraordinary versatility: when needed, the central section can be modified and converted into an outdoor lounge featuring a practical central table. This is the ideal setup for enjoying a sunset aperitif in complete privacy, soaking up the sea breeze.
Moving toward the stern, passage is fluid and safe thanks to convenient side walkways flanking the central console. This brings us to the social heart of the vessel: the large aft dinette of the Scanner Envy 1100. Here, Scanner Marine has designed a welcoming and hyper-functional space, centered around a large equipped wet bar—essential for life outdoors. This unit serves as the base for an extendable table surrounded by a generous U-shaped sofa. The seats are ergonomic, and the available space easily accommodates four to six people, ensuring maximum guest comfort.
The Water-Level Beach Club and Surprising Interior
Past the central cockpit of the Scanner Envy 1100, you reach the stern area, home to a massive sunbed capable of comfortably accommodating three people. Stepping down a practical step reveals one of the real strong points of this specific configuration. The Scanner Envy 1100 we are testing is indeed the sterndrive version of this magnificent maxi-rib range. Compared to the outboard engine configuration, this choice completely frees up the transom of the Scanner Envy 1100, transforming the platform into a spacious, clean Beach Club right next to the water—perfect for easy access to the sea or simply relaxing close to the waves.
An 11-meter Maxi RIB (measuring exactly 1,100 cm in length and 360 cm in beam) is by nature a day cruiser, but the Scanner Envy 1100 holds another surprise for discerning owners. Moving forward and opening the access door built into the console reveals a small yet complete cabin. This is no mere storage compartment or cramped changing room: this cabin on the Scanner Envy 1100 features a marine head and a convenient sink.
The interior dimensions and volume—unexpected from the outside—can accommodate a couple overnight at anchor or for a weekend getaway at sea. This feature vastly expands the vessel’s operational range.
Returning to the deck, we take our place at the helm station. The layout is in true Scanner style: elegant, clean, and incredibly ergonomic. The console of the Scanner Envy 1100 is equipped with all necessary navigation and engine control instrumentation, but what impresses most is that everything is intelligently placed right where it should be, always within arm’s reach.
