NEW GERMAN FRERS HYBRID WALLY 145 UNDER CONSTRUCTION

9 mins read

The construction phase of the first Wally 145, the latest among the performance cruisers of the Monegasque brand created by Luca Bassani, has just started. The shipyard has indeed just signed an agreement to sell this 44-metre boat designed by German Frers architects following the request of a long-experienced sailor. Like all Wally boats, this yacht, too, promises to be highly revolutionary.

“The new Wally 145 is the perfect yacht to enjoy sailing all around the world”  – Bassani claims – She epitomizes our credo of uncompromised performances combined with timeless aesthetical beauty and providing the owner with the pleasure of truly sailing in any wind conditions, from the very light to the strong airs, in complete comfort”.

The distinctive elements of Wally boats along with the great experience of Frers naval architects have generated a mega sailer providing with all amenities of walkaround yachts of over 40 metres as well as extraordinary sailing performances.  “The new Wally 145 has been created for a distinguished , experienced sailor who actually enjoys driving a reactive, well-balanced, pleasant and fast sailing yacht while cruising with his family but also, and above all, while racing around the cans. The initial brief was for a larger yacht and, contrary to the norm, the new project decreased in size and got simpler during the design process, in search of agility, speed and a closer vicinity to both the sea and elements. Extensive research was conducted in order to get the best performances in the attempt of obtaining the lightest weight within the specifications of the project, a pleasant ample interior, three different and separated  deck areas and a sophisticated sail handling system” – German Frers explains.

The main salon of the Wally 145 is directly connected to the external cockpit, in its turn sheltered by the superstructure.

The sail area/displacement ratio is much greater than any other mega yacht of this category, which makes the Wally 145 a fast yacht even in 6-knot wind” Bassani confirms ” At the same time, in fresh breeze, the yacht is very stable and powerful thanks to the particular shape of the hull and her lifting keel. With the keel fully lowered, draft reaches over 7 metres”. The Wally 145 actually combines huge volumes with a considerably light displacement (just 171 tons): almost 100 tons less than any other mega yacht of the same category.

This is made possible by the cutting-edge carbon fibre technology, innovative naval architecture and development of on-board systems and engineering. The Wally 145is equipped with a hybrid propulsion package and a lithium battery pack that allow all the systems of the mega yacht to run in silent mode while providing with overnight autonomy even with air conditioning and all the auxiliary systems running. Bow and stern thrusters and two electric engines connected to the twin retractable shafts provide Dynamic Positioning capability for manoeuvring in silent mode. All this results into a zero-emission 100% silent eco-friendly yacht providing absolute comfort when sailing in fresh breeze along with the possibility of sailing in protected areas. Anyway, under power, the yacht is able to reach a cruising speed of 15 knots.

Both the deck and interiors feature an innovative layout which proves to be a further development of the Wally balcony-in-the-sea concept already presented in 1998 with the Tiketitan.

The two guest cockpits on the main deck

The main lounge and the guest cockpits are all positioned on the same level, with no steps between the different spaces, which improves the Wally’s distinctive style, safety ad comfort both while sailing and when at anchor. Furthermore, the deck hosts two guest cockpits: one is completely covered while the other is en plein air. “An absolute gem of our 44-metre yacht is the third cockpit at lower deck level, the same of the owner’s suite”, Luca Bassani explains. ” This further space is reserved for the owners’ private use and ensures absolute privacy”. Interiors, developed by Wally with Droulers architects and Mario Sculli studio, feature the wide owner’s suite furnished with two queen-size beds, a men’s and a women’s toilet (a bathroom also has a bath tub), an office and two walk-in wardrobes. Guest cabins can accommodate up to 6 people. They include two cabins with twin beds and a cabin with pullman berths. The salon is located at mid-ship, above the engine room, and can accommodate up to 10 guests. The inner sailing area is in the front left zone. The salon is connected to the two guest cockpits creating a unique huge living area. Service rooms and crew quarters are on the bow, equipped with a galley, a sitting room and four double cabins, all with en-suite bathroom.

The Wally 145 is currently under construction in the new Massa Carrara-based shipyard of Persico Marine, a facility that has recently resulted from the fruitful partnership between the owner and Wally. It’s a unique worldwide facility dedicated to the advanced composite mega cruiser manufacturing. “We’re very proud of this collaboration which benefits from the Wally’s 20-year experience in light building technologies and system engineering on one side and our worldwide known competence in the production of high-performance yachts on the other one”,Persico Marine CEO Marcello Persico says. “We’re sure that this mega yacht will raise the bar in yachting industry and mark the beginning of a successful story”. The launch date is expected in May 2019.

Other Wally yachts currently under construction are the Wallycento#4 and the Wally 93, which will be launch in July 2017 and spring 2018 respectively, the fifth unit of the 27 Wallyace, two 52 Wallypower and some units of the new Wallytender X.
