Dear readers, welcome to what could easily be the perfect anchorage. Far away from crowded marinas and the annoying noise of neighbors, we are taking in the beauty of the untouched sea.

But alas, amid all this beauty, we are also far from shore power pedestals.

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to have your espresso, hot water for a shower, and house batteries 100% charged without having to turn on the main engine or install a complex, exorbitantly expensive inboard generator?

We were convinced it wasn’t possible. That’s precisely why today we are putting a portable generator that is considered legendary worldwide to the test: the Honda EU22i. We are truly curious to see if it can handle the power demands of an entire boat.

Honda EU22i: The Smart Alternative to an Inboard Generator

The first question comes naturally: why not just install a permanent marine generator? Let’s be real—an inboard generator is every boat owner’s dream, but it often turns into a financial nightmare. It costs astronomical amounts, adds hundreds of kilograms to the vessel, and requires constant maintenance—impellers, filters, and oil changes. Even worse, it forces you to drill new holes in the hull for raw water intakes and exhausts.

This Honda generator, on the other hand, costs a fraction of the price, requires no holes in the boat, and its maintenance is virtually nonexistent. And at the end of the season? You simply pick it up by the handle and take it home, thanks to a dry weight of just 21 kg.

Inverter Technology and Variable Speed: A Quiet, Fuel-Efficient Workhorse

Beneath the rugged red housing of the EU22i beats a 121 cc 4-stroke Honda GXR 120 engine, famous for being a absolute workhorse—literally unstoppable.

The real brilliance, however, lies in its technology: it is a variable-speed inverter generator. Thanks to the “Eco Throttle” feature, the engine automatically adjusts its RPM to match the actual power load required at any given moment, ensuring significant fuel savings and keeping sound emissions to a minimum. With a fuel tank of just 3.6 liters, its runtime can actually exceed 8 hours of continuous operation.

The control unit of the Honda EU22i delivers a pure sine wave. This technical detail is crucial for us boaters: it means the electricity produced is completely safe for powering sensitive electronics.

On the control panel, you’ll find two 230 V Schuko outlets capable of delivering 1,800 continuous watts and up to 2.2 kilowatts of peak surge power, alongside a 12 V / 8.3 Amp DC output—extremely handy for quickly charging an emergency battery or the power pack of an electric tender outboard directly.

Honda EU22i: Onboard Sea Trial on Daydreamer

Enough talk—we’re on the boat and want to see what it can actually power. We filled the oil (a super simple process), topped off the fuel tank, and thanks to Honda’s technology, the pull-start required minimal effort, firing the engine up on the very first pull.

With the Eco Throttle function active, the generator purrs at idle and is remarkably quiet: registering just 67 decibels at a distance of 50 centimeters. Moving into the cockpit of Daydreamer, our test boat, the sound of the generator running on the bow drops to a whisper: here we recorded between 58 and 60 dB maximum. Not bad at all.

At this point, we plugged the Honda into the boat’s shore power inlet using an adapter from the Schuko plug to a standard 16-amp marine connector. We started with the baseline load: the boat’s battery charger (around 700 W). The generator sensed the demand, spooled up slightly, and delivered the necessary power to charge the battery bank.

Daydreamer features 4 house batteries of 120 Ah each and uses a Quick SBC 700 NRG+ charger (12 V, 60 Ah max) to top them up. In our setup, the charge profile had engaged the initial boost phase and, powered by the generator, was charging at 57 Ah without flinching, keeping external sound levels contained to a quiet 74–75 decibels.

Since this load was barely tickling the generator, we decided to push it hard by simultaneously turning on the charger along with:

  • The Quick hot water heater (1,200 W)
  • The Starlink antenna (50 W)
  • My Mac power adapter (85 W)
  • The charger for the tender’s electric motor, an E-Propulsion E-Lite (120 W)

This brought our total load to a whopping 2,155 Watts—flirting right with the 2,200 W peak output limit of our Honda EU22i. The engine revs climbed to maximum, but the portable generator didn’t skip a beat. Under this extreme stress, we registered an overall 79 decibels at a couple of meters distance and under 90 dB when bringing the sound meter within 50 centimeters of the unit itself. That’s an exceptionally reasonable noise level to enjoy so many creature comforts at anchor. It’s worth noting that in real-world scenarios, you’d rarely run the water heater and battery charger at the exact same moment anyway—it just wouldn’t make sense.

Boating Safety: The Golden Rule

Before wrapping up, let’s address the most critical point of the entire test: safety. Never—and I mean never—use a portable generator inside the boat, in a locker, or in the engine room. Internal combustion engines produce carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas.

The generator must always and exclusively be operated outdoors, paying close attention to keep it far away from hatches and portholes, which are always best kept closed during operation.

Safety always comes first.

One of the biggest advantages of this portable generator over an inboard model is portability. It weighs very little—around 21 kg dry weight. At the end of the season, you can simply pick it up by the integrated handle and easily carry it home.
