Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 455: complete (and surprising) test for the flagship of the range

With the debut of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 455, the French shipyard hasn’t just launched a new vessel; it has redefined the very concept of the cruising sailboat. This boat features a stunning new hull, born from the drafting table of the Marc Lombard Yacht Design Group. The interior and exterior designs—both exceptionally well-executed—are credited to the brilliant Jean-Marc Piaton. In short, it is an excellent pairing that successfully merges fast waterlines with a level of living comfort that rivals the volume of boats in higher categories.

The Sea Trial of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 455

Putting a 45-foot pure cruiser to the test with true wind oscillating between 4 and 6 knots is often a merciless challenge. However, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 455 immediately surprised us with its ability to generate apparent wind—and therefore speed—even in the most difficult conditions.

As soon as we took the helm, with only 4 knots of true wind, the boat began to glide through the water at 3.6 knots using only the mainsail and genoa. These are Dacron sails of standard manufacture, with a total sail area of just 103 square meters.

What strikes you immediately is the smoothness of its passage through the waves, a characteristic that, besides offering great sailing comfort, allows this sailboat to maintain its pace without slowing down when meeting swells. The moment of tacking—critical in light wind—confirmed the reduced drag of this hull, which sails effortlessly even in these conditions.

By maneuvering gently, this sailing boat lost only 1.5 knots of speed, accelerating promptly as it came out of the tack without ever showing signs of stalling. Once we hoisted the Code 0, the vessel truly thrilled us, allowing us to sail between 6 and 6.5 knots, practically matching the intensity of the true wind.

Even when pinching at about 50 degrees, the Sun Odyssey 455 showed remarkable acceleration, heeling decisively while maintaining a fluidity of handling that is rare for a boat of this displacement. This is a feature that allows this boat to sail nearly all the time, relegating the motor only to transfers in a total calm or for entering and leaving ports.

Furthermore, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 455 is equipped with twin rudders, a setup that greatly benefits maneuverability, even as the heel angle increases.

In practice, this is a boat that truly won us over. The only downside? We would have loved to test it in medium wind conditions; it certainly would have gifted us long, beautiful planings with the GPS hitting double-digit speeds!

Performance and Navigation Summary

  • Light Wind Performance: Ability to sail at 3.6 knots with only 4 knots of true wind.

  • Code 0 Efficiency: Reaching speeds equal to or greater than the true wind (6.5 knots in 6 knots of wind).

  • Stability and Control: The twin rudder setup guarantees extreme precision and safety at any heel angle, making it easy to handle even with a shorthanded crew.

  • Engine Propulsion: The upgraded 80 hp engine ensures fast transfers with cruising speeds exceeding 8 knots.

Exteriors: Walk-around, Space, and Total Comfort

The deck design of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 455 is a tribute to safety and conviviality. The most distinctive element (introduced and proven years ago) is the continuous side decks, a “walk-around” concept that allows movement from the aft helm stations to the bow without having to climb over steps or obstacles. This feature isn’t just aesthetic; it drastically increases safety on board during maneuvers or night sailing.

The cockpit is a true terrace on the sea. Thanks to the clever use of the maximum beam, two large opposing L-shaped sofas have been created. Served by folding tables, they can comfortably host 8 to 10 people for dinner. The aft steering zone is split, featuring ergonomic steering wheels and all electronic instrumentation within reach—including engine and autopilot controls on the starboard station for easy access. Forward visibility is perfect from both wheels.

At the bow, the vessel offers a large bowsprit, essential for tacking the Code 0 or Gennaker. The coachroof forward of the mast accommodates central cushioning, transforming this area into a wide sunpad for two—ideal for relaxing at anchor.

Exterior Design Summary

  • Revolutionary Accessibility: Continuous, step-free side decks for fluid and safe movement on deck.

  • “Boundless” Cockpit: Double L-shaped dinette with folding tables to accommodate up to 10 guests.

  • Twin Helm Stations: Ergonomic command positions with full instrumentation and optimal visibility.

  • Transformable Bow: Large sunbathing area and integrated bowsprit to maximize sailing performance.

The Interior of the Sun Odyssey 455: Ample Space and High-End Finishes

Stepping through the companionway, you are welcomed by volumes that feel like they belong to a 50-foot yacht. Natural light floods the dinette, where space has been optimized for life on board, even during long-range cruises.

On the starboard side, there is a professional chart table served by a chair that hides a surprise: it can transform into a chaise longue with a headrest, creating a unique relaxation corner. The U-shaped galley is domestic in size, equipped with a double sink, gimballed stove, and a dual-access refrigerator (top and front loading), allowing for significant storage capacity.

The Master Cabin, located at the bow, is the true crown jewel of this boat. Spacious and airy, it offers a central queen-size bed (allowing you to sleep with your head toward the bow), ample walking space, and a private ensuite head featuring a completely separate shower stall.

Aft, the two guest cabins maintain high standards with 140 cm wide beds and a generous second head (also with a separate shower) that serves as a day head. Finally, a technical compartment to starboard can be configured as a walk-in closet, workshop, office, or a third head.
