R-Evolution X36, intriguing and aggressive: video sea trial

The R-Evolution X36 is a maxi RIB that’s both undeniably intriguing and aggressive. It’s no coincidence that it’s powered by three Mercury Verado V10 engines, each delivering 350 horsepower—for a total of 1,050 horsepower. This setup promises plenty of surprises, as we had the chance to show during our sea trial of this stunning inflatable boat. In the video below, we tested it in Marina di Varazze, alongside its sister model, the E-Motion 36.

R-Evolution X36 Sea Trial

As always, we begin our sea trial at idle speed. At 600 rpm, total fuel consumption is 3.03 gallons per hour. We throttle up to see how it gets up on plane—and the response is immediate. At 12 knots, we’re already planing, and without even accelerating, the boat smoothly stretches over the water and instantly reaches 16.5 knots. We speed up a bit more and settle into a classic cruising speed of 20 knots at 2,500 rpm, with a total consumption of just 17.17 gallons per hour—not bad at all.

We climb to 30 knots to see the R-Evolution X36 fully stretched over the water. We’re heading directly into the waves, yet there’s no slamming. The hull slices cleanly, parting the sea with impressive softness. We’re now at 3,500 rpm and total fuel consumption is 29.05 gals per hour—surprisingly low for this speed.

We throttle up again to reach 40 knots—a thrilling cruising speed for a maxi-RIB like this. At 4,350 rpm, it hits the mark, using just 43.58 gallons per hour. That’s clear proof of a hull that doesn’t drag but glides, and of a boat that’s been extremely well designed.

We also try a wide, steady turn. The R-Evolution X36 remains composed, cruising comfortably and making us want to speed up. So, throttles down—and we reach 54.2 knots, the boat’s top speed.

The boat’s behaviour is excellent, even in tighter turns, which we test at around 25 knots: the boat leans smoothly without losing speed and carves a perfect circle, with the hull gripping the water throughout. The R-Evolution X36 performs just as impressively as its sister model, the E-Motion 36. They share the same hull, but this maxi-RIB is about 500 kg lighter, a difference that’s clearly felt in its sporty behavior through curves—while remaining fun and safe to drive. As you can see in the video, we try all sorts of maneuvers, but we just can’t catch this hull off guard. It stays soft and composed on the water, no matter what we throw at it.

The R-Evolution X36 in detail

The level of finish on the R-Evolution X36 is also truly impressive. While the E-Motion 36 features a cabin-equipped hull, the R-Evolution X36 takes on a more traditional walkaround layout with a distinctly sportier character. Thanks to its certified length being under 10 meters, it can be either officially registered or simply classified as a recreational vessel.

The helm station is protected by a large T-Top, which can be fitted with an extendable sunshade to cover and provide shade for the entire aft dinette area. The dashboard is fully equipped, featuring a large display, navigation instruments, and all the systems needed for onboard automation.

As for the deck layout, being a walkaround, the R-Evolution X36 includes a forward-facing bench seat—likely to be one of the most popular spots when underway. Moving toward the bow, there’s a V-shaped sofa that can be converted into a large sunpad by adding a filler cushion or table. So, if you’re looking for a fast, sporty, and adrenaline-pumping day cruiser with everything you need for an enjoyable day out at sea, the R-Evolution X36 is the maxi-RIB for you.
